You are the proud owner of a swimming pool and/or a hot tub. Your big concern now, other than making sure no one drowns, is making sure no one gets sick or infected by using it.

You do that by putting something into the water to kill organisms that might be harmful to humans. the main options are chorine, bromine, Baquacil and ozone. you need to be aware that there are serious health concerns with the first two and, for pools at least, you can’t use ozone by itself.

Chlorine

Chlorine has been around the longest, and is still the most common method of purifying the water. however, it is a poison. it kills things. That’s what it is supposed to do. the problem is that it can be harmful to humans, although not as harmful as the things it kills, supposedly. the trick is to put enough in to kill the bad stuff, but not so much as to harm you and your loved ones.

Why can chlorine be harmful? For one thing, the body absorbs it. you can absorb as much chlorine in one hour of sitting in chlorinated water as you would drinking unfiltered, chlorinated tap water for a week Furthermore, by-products are formed in the water when it comes in contact with organic matter, ammonia compounds and nitrogen compounds. the main source of those is people’s bodies – the sweat, dead skin, urine, etc. These compounds reduce the effectiveness of the chlorine, necessitating adding more. They also cause the bad smell and burning eyes associated with pools. some of the by-products have been linked to spontaneous abortions and other problems with embryos.

Bromine

Bromine is also a poison but, for a number of reasons, might be a better choice over chlorine. Its high evaporation point makes it more stable, so it doesn’t smell as bad or is as irritating to the eyes. On the other hand, that stability can make it more difficult to mix with the water and wash off your skin. it also may not be as effective against some bacteria as chlorine.

Baquacil

Baquacil is a form of hydrogen peroxide. it is more expensive than chlorine, but easier to use. it does not create health affecting byproducts like chlorine and it is also very straight forward to use, whereas chlorine can be a bit hit or miss.

There are, however, a couple of negatives to consider. it seems that after a few years, the water quality starts to decline. in addition, there have been reports of strange infestations occurring in pools on the Baquacil program. If this happens, you will probably have to drain the pool and start over again.

Ozone

Ozone can be added to any of the above systems to make them more effective, cheaper to operate, and, in the case of chlorine and bromine, safer to use. Adding ozone allows you to reduce the use of the other chemicals.

Ozone is created in nature by lightening as it passes through the air, and by the action of ultraviolet rays on the oxygen in the air. that nice, clean scent you notice after a rainstorm is caused by ozone.

Ozone is a natural purifier and is the most powerful oxidizer that can be safely used. Its big problem is that it is highly unstable, so it does not last long in water. A hot tub has a relatively small amount of water in a confined area, and many people use ozone exclusively without health problems. For swimming pools, however, you will need to use other chemicals as well.

Making the Choice

Before you invest in a system to keep your swimming pool or hot tub safe for use, be sure to examine all the options carefully. Talk with others using systems similar to those you are considering. Do a lot of research and a cost/benefit analysis for each option.

Its summertime and the kids are looking forward to going to the Summer School Programs or the local YMCA and YWCA. the one thing they want to do is go swimming. I remember as a kid going to Venetian Pool in Coral Gables, Fl. it was great, we would spend the entire day there. My brother and I did this all summer long. the kids now go to the local community pools and have a good time also. it is important that all children learn how to swim. You never know when it will come in handy later on. I taught my children how to swim at ages 2 and 3, this is young, but we live near water and in Florida. another thing, most parents do not think about the possibility of a chlorine allergy from a swimming pool.

Chlorine is used to disinfect swimming pools to prevent algae and bacteria from building up in the water. if the water is left untreated, the water becomes detrimental to the health of the users of the pool. I remember once when my daughters went into a pool that was not sterilized properly, they ended up with ear infections from the water. At the time we did not know any better about the dangers of unsterilized water. that was a costly lesson when we had to take them to the Doctor, plus the medication. so, be aware of unsterilized pools.

If you have a chlorine allergy, you have to stay away from chloride-containing swimming pools. we have a client whose little boy is allergic to chloride-containing water and is not allowed to go to public swimming pools or to a friends house for a swimming party. it is sad, but true. They take the boy to the beach and he is fine. he has no problem in salt water. the family will invite the other kids in the neighborhood to go with them, this is how they cope with his allergy so he can have a partway normal childhood. this is only one solution for people who have this allergy, go to the beach if it is nearby.

There are other forms of disinfectant systems such as PristineBlue system, which is an environmentally friendly algicide and bactericide. another is also environmentally friendly disinfectant called Baquacil. a third alternative is pools disinfected using Ozone. Do an Internet search on Google and check all three out. we do not recommend any particular type. You will have to make that decision. I have seen the Baquacil system in use with one client, they were happy with the product. another client uses Ozone and they were happy with their disinfectant system also. so, do some investigation on your own and make a choice for your child with Chlorine Allergy.

A friend of mine’s little girl developed a rash from swimming in chloride-containing pool water. They did not know what caused it at first until after multiple times in the swimming pool, a rash would appear. Her symptoms were skin and eye irritation, itchiness, nasal congestion and a rash which looks similar to heat rash. They now use one of the alternative disinfectant systems for their swimming pool. She was told by the Doctor to use a sunscreen to help cope with the allergy. Her mother did not like that idea, so they changed to a Baquacil system disinfectant.

Vacations should be fun and relaxing. It’s a nice to return to from that vacation and jump into your pool to cool off after hours out on the road. But what if you walk into your backyard only to find that your sparkling blue pool is now a murky, algae infested swamp? Here’s how to prevent that from happening to you this summer.

First of all don’t rely on friends or neighbors. They just know how to do it especially if they don’t own a pool. and odds are they’re going to forget.

If your pool isn’t already operating on a timer, get one. that is the biggest time saver you can have. have the pool run about 12 hours daily, every day. if you don’t have a timer and can’t get one before leaving on vacation, let the pool run continually 24-7. The little extra you’ll spend in electricity will be well worth it.

Make sure the water is in good balance. The best pool water balance parameters are: pH 7.4 – 7.6, Total alkalinity 100 – 140 ppm, Calcium hardness about 200 – 250 ppm. if the water balance is adjusted properly before your vacation, you shouldn’t have to worry about them slipping too far even if you and your family are gone for up to 2 weeks.

The day before departure vacuum and thoroughly clean the pool. Brush, vacuum and clean all of the pool’s surfaces. Backwash the sand filter or thoroughly rinse the cartridge or DE (diatomaceous filter grids). Don’t forget to recharge the DE filter for proper operation. Make sure that you have added enough slow dissolving chlorine tablets or sticks into the skimmer or automatic chlorinator. if you typically use granular chlorine to sanitize your swimming pool, consider using the slow dissolving products in your pool’s skimmer otherwise your pool will be out of chlorine and out of algae and bacteria fighting protection. Figure on using about one pound of slow dissolving chlorine per about 10,000 gallons or any part of that (i.e., a 14,000 gallon pool should use a full 2 pounds rather than 1.4 pounds) per every 5 days to be on the safe side.

Just before leaving, add a double dose of chlorine shock to the pool AND a double dose of a good quality algaecide. try to stay away from the gallon types of algaecides, they’re just too watered down do any good. Look for and use an algaecide that has at least 40% active ingredients or more. Copper based algaecides are good for treating algae problems, but not the best when used as a preventative product.

Pools that are treated with biguanide products such as Baquacil or BioGuard Soft Swim should follow the water balancing routine mentioned above then top off the sanitizer level to 40 – 50 ppm, add additional hydrogen peroxide shock (Baqua Shock or Soft Swim C) so that the level is high on the test strip, and add a double dose of the biguanide system’s algaecide.

If you normally use a solar blanket, consider removing it from the pool or at the least, properly and thoroughly chemically clean the solar blanket. Many pool water quality issues are the result of algae and bacteria bio-films growing on the water side of the solar blanket. You don’t even know they are there until you feel that little bit of slime. That’s all that it takes to start a pool problem that could be a major mess and clean up when you return from a great vacation.

One last thing to consider before going on vacation; if you’re not already using a borate based product in your pool such as BioGuard Optimizer Plus or Proteam Supreme, use it. Borates are great algae preventing chemicals. When used at the proper levels in the pool (about 40 – 60 ppm in chlorine or bromine treated pools and 50 – 80 ppm in biguanide treated pools), algae blooms are virtually eliminated. Borates also add to the buffering ability of the water so that the pH and total alkalinity aren’t as affected by large amounts of rain or other larger top-offs of water into the pool. Pool owners and swimmers also find that their skin, eyes and hair feel better in pool water that contains borates (eye doctors use eye rinses that contain borates).

The easy way to change back to chlorine in your pool.

Baquacil was a huge hit when introduced to the pool market in the late 1980′s. while pricey, it gave pool owners the convenience and confidence of a cook book solution to the hit or miss job of pool care. if you followed the Baquacil recipe your time invested in keeping your pool water clean and ready was drastically reduced and water quality was rarely a problem. Sound too good to be true?

After a time word began to circulate that it was too good to be true. too often after two or three years of using the product not only did water quality decline but some weird and unusual infestations took hold in pools on the Baquacil program. Don’t misunderstand, Baquacil is safe and has all the proper approvals but as with other sanitizing systems things can go wrong. unfortunately with the Baquacil system putting things right again usually involves draining the pool and starting fresh.

If this has happened to you and you’ve decided you want to switch back to good ole chlorine here’s the simplest recipe I know to do it.

1. Shut off your pump and shock your pool with 2 lbs. of granular dichlor per 10,000 gallons. Prepare for a jolt because the pool will almost instantly develop a heavy and unsightly surface scum. This is supposed to happen.

2. Let the scum sit overnight. Next day the scum should be sitting on the bottom of the pool in a fine layer. At this point turn on your pump and set the filter to waste and vacuum the scum out of the pool. You will lose some water during this process.

3. Shut down the pump again and test your water with the Baquacil test kit. if it shows Baquacil still present shock the pool again as in step 1 but use 1 lb dichlor per 10,000 gallons. the scum may reappear but should be much lighter and easier to remove. Let the pool sit overnight, vacuum and retest.

4. if your test kit shows no Baquacil present you can refill the pool and restart on a chlorine program right away.

This program is virtually foolproof and is what the pool chemical manufacturers actually recommend. Instead of having your pool drained and out of service, not to mention the expense of refilling, you’re up and swimming again in a couple of days.

VITALLY IMPORTANT-Never vacuum the scum into your filter or you will have to change your sand or replace your cartridge. Always vacuume to waste during this process. Baquacil is NOT compatible with chlorine products (that’s why it scums up) and is extremely difficult to remove once introduced into a filter.
